Qdos Event Hire worked alongside temporary overlay specialist GL events to deliver a range of units, including bespoke buildings and brand-new welfare facilities, at several key Commonwealth Games 2022 venues.
At the heart of the sporting action in Birmingham’s city centre was Smithfield, where GL events created purpose-built Basketball and Beach Volleyball courts. Utilising its CTX range, Qdos designed and installed sports presentation units that sat alongside the field of play. Four 20’ x 8’ units were installed side by side and incorporated bespoke floor to ceiling windows, manufactured specifically to meet the OC’s requirements, air conditioning, cable management and retractable awnings.
Also installed at Smithfield was a specialist 20’ x 16’ broadcast cabins, used to house extensive amounts of technology and equipment. These were fitted out to meet the OC and broadcasters’ specific needs with air conditioning, cable management and fire protection equipment.
The broadcast cabins were replicated at key venues across the West Midlands for various sports: Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls in Victoria Park; Mountain Biking, Cannock Chase; Triathlon, Sutton Park and Cycling, Wolverhampton.
Welfare facilities provided included 11 female, a male and an accessible toilet to Smithfield; two female toilets to Sutton Park; four female toilets to Victoria Park; a female toilet to Wolverhampton, Cannock Chase and Coventry Arena and an accessible toilet delivered to the NEC.
A team of Qdos engineers were on standby during games time to carry out essential maintenance.
As you would expect with a one-off event of this scale, multiple venues, varying requirements and the number of stakeholders involved, it wasn’t without its challenges. The Qdos team worked closely with GL events’ project management team to ensure its successful delivery.
